This is a proud Union, and we have a proud history, CWA has been in existance for many years ,yet our members do not really know about their Union. If we as members plan to have a Union in the future, then we as members need to educate ourselves, as to what the Union really does, and who they represent. We also need to educate ourselves to the other actives that this Union is involved in such as, Politics, Organizing, Saftey and Health and all the other activities this Union is involved in. The Local is committed to the education of the membership on all fronts, all you as a members have to do is ask, but, if the membership just sits back and waits for the leadership to take care of business, then not all of the work needed to be done, can be acomplished.
If each member would take the time to become active at some level, and improve their understanding of their Union, then we could increase our power. This power increases expodentially, as each member becomes involved.
Education is the key to the involvement of you as members. All of you have many strengths from which your Union could pull from, if you would just take some time to share your skills with the local.
The Union is only as strong as the membership participation allows it to be. Many members look to the Local or International as the Union, this is not the way it works. The strength of our Union lies in its members.
YOU ARE THE UNION. It does no good to say we have 700,000 members if only 1 or 2% of the membership is active and involved. Verbal support is nice but, it does not help accomplish the goals of this Union, or any Union.
I would challenge each of you to get involved in your local at some level, I would challenge each of you to educated yourself as to the history of this Union, so you can see where we started and how much progress has been made over the years to get us to where we are today.
I hear many employees say, "look what the Company gave me", the Company has given you anything, nor will they ever give you anything. What you have today as it relates to benifits, wages and working conditions, are those things that the people before us were willing to fight for, and take a stand on in order to improve their future, and the future of those who would come after them.
I believe ,that if you as members, expect this Union to be around 10 years from now, and have the power required to deal with the Companies we deal with, then each and every member out there has to make a concious decision, that I am going to get involved, and help set the course, for our own future.
Education is the key and if we educate ourselves, and get involved there is nothing that we can not accomplish, but if we sit back and wait for someone else to do something, nothing will get done.
